Welcome

Sheffield University Ceilidh Society is one of a large number of clubs run under the umbrella of the Sheffield Union of Students.

We organise regular ceilidhs, usually one every two or three weeks, as well as a regular programme of workshops, music events, sessions and trips to other festivals and ceilidhs. Music is also an important part of the society so if you would like to play (at any skill level) come along to a session.

Regular Sessions

The regular Ceilidhsoc session is now at the Red Deer pub on Wednesday. See below for more details. If you like the music at ceilidhs and want to hear more or play some then this is the place to be.

Mailing List

Ceilidhsoc have a mailing list that you can join where we send announcements of ceilidhs, events and other folky related information.

Tunes and Music

There is an extensive collection of music (dots) available in our online tunes database. Here you can find many of the tunes that are played at our ceilidhs and sessions. During term time we also run regular Ceilidh Music Workshops where you can learn to play some of these tunes if you're not confident enough to play in a session yet.

There is a compilation CD called Forged in Sheffield available featuring several bands who met through Ceilidhsoc. It can be bought online or from the front desk at our ceilidhs.

Your Society Needs You!

Those ceilidhs don't run themselves you know. Ceilidhsoc is alway looking for people who want to get a bit more involved or just to help out. If you would like to do more than just dance, then talk to one of the current committee.

Alumni Foundation Support

We would like to thank the University of Sheffield Alumni Foundation for supporting CeilidhSoc.

Regular Events

Ceilidh Music Workshop
8:00 - 9:00 pm
Every Wednesday
during term time

Conrad our music officer or guest teachers will be running regular workshops in the Red Deer Pub before the session helping people learn some of the tunes that are played at Ceildihs and at the sessions. It is intended for people who are new to folk music or not confident enough to play in sessions yet. Basic knowledge of your instrument is helpful, but no experience of folk music is required! There are also some tune books available for purchase for you to take away and practice in your own time (while stocks last).

Session
9:00pm onwards
Every Wednesday

The regular Ceilidhsoc session is now held at the Red Deer Pub (on Pitt Lane, just off Mappin Street) every Wednesday. Musicians and non-musicians are all welcome. The session is a great opportunity for those new and old members of the society to get together to chat, play music and swap tunes.
